    DOMINIC SENA, OPUS 1
***1/2 1993. Directed by Dominic Sena. Two couples travel west. David Duchovny is a psychologist and Brad Pitt a serial killer. Thanks to Juliette Lewis and Brad Pitt’s performances, this movie could be worth your time.

Going to California with a Killer
I didn’t really believe Brad Pitt could be convincing as the repulsive low life serial killer Early. I also didn’t believe Juliette Lewis could create a sympathetic character out of his apparently developmentally disabled girlfriend Adele. Yet both Pitt and Lewis stunned me with their realistic portrayals. Unfortunately the film is not credible because it does not seem plausible that grad student/writer/aspiring serial killer expert Brian (played by David Duchovney) and his tough girlfriend who takes “not ready for the Bible Belt” photographs would be either desperate or stupid enough to agree to drive Pitt and Lewis’s very seedy looking characters in their car several thousand miles to the promised land of California just for some help with the gas money. This cross country trip is made even longer by several planned stops to infamous murder sites Brian and Carrie need to make for research for a book they are planning and that plot point does nothing to enhance the believability of this film. Although the film does evoke a nightmarish feel as it progresses and Pitt and Lewis’s performances are very good the movie does not really rise above the level of mediocre thriller. And as one would expect in a road movie with a serial killer there is a lot of graphic violence and other images that do not make this a good choice for the squeamish.

    Intriguing Story w/Great Acting
Brad Pitt has none of the “pretty boy” thing working in this disturbing little flick. He plays an creepy sociopath so well, that you forget it’s him - he is totally transformed. Juliette Lewis does a great job as his big-hearted girlfriend. Mesmerizing for those drawn to the Tarantino & Rodriguez style of dark humor & violence.

    Painful
The plot of the movie is flimsy and the acting is poor. Don’t waste your time.

They have made homicidal maniacs boring
Here’s a quick recap of this B movie. Lewis plays a waitress in her usual moronic, whiney, deer in headlights, wide-eyed stupid way. She of course is in love with Pitt, a run of the mill red-neck who sits around drinking beer all day and chewin tobacky. (Insert Woody Harelson several years later). Then we have the X-Files guy, who is as boring as a second coat of paint. He is a writer, now ain’t that excitin. He sits around whining all day about how the death penalty is bad and we should open up all the prison gates.

I have looked deep within myself and cannot understand all the positive reviews of this film. I have watched Tom and Jerry episodes with more dynamic acting and plot. Skip this trash folks…..

    Excellent!
This DVD is EXCELLENT! It not only features video clips of The Who doing material from the album, but it also features clips of how Pete Townshend put together a lot of the album. Also, there is some great footage about Keith Moon towards the end.

Great concept for a documentary. Great Album
I took a chance and got this DVD because “Who’s Next” is really one of the greatest albums of all time, and one of my personal favorites.

I came away with some real insights into the Who. First, these were fantastic musicians. Second, Townshend is really a great musical talent. Third, you realize that music just isn’t at the same level any more. Not because there are not great musicians around, but rather the art form itself has changed. It is because this current generation has moved onto other musical forms. The concept album doesn’t speak to younger generations. Too bad, because The Who show what power great rock music can have. It truly is a great art form.

When I heard this album in college, I was blown away. From Baba O’Riley - which is not about getting wasted, but rather is about wasted life - to Won’t Get Fooled Again, the quality of the music is amazing.

You will get to see acoustic performances of several songs, a discussion of the Lifehouse concept which led to Who’s Next (you could call it Townshend’s Smile), several engineers discussing the individual tracks and how the totality of the music was created, and interviews with Townshend, Entwistle and Daltrey. This documentary makes you realize just how much work goes into creating great music.

Truly, a terrific concept for a documentary. I would recommend this wholeheartedly.

    Who’s Best
The idea behind the Classic Albums series that this DVD is a part of, is to illuminate the development and recording of truly memorable albums. Albums that will stand the test of time. Who’s Next is unquestionably one of those albums. This documentary provides insight into the objective Pete Townsend was attempting to attain with his aborted Lifehouse project. It reveals how the music on Who’s Next is indebted to his overreaching attempt to create something bigger than the Who were capable of. Along the way we see and hear great performances by the Who at their peak and acoustic versions of classic songs bring new depth to a master work. The sound is spectacular. I wish the whole album were on here with DVD fidelity.

    Great
Great music and footage. Interesting interviews, I had no idea of the back history of this album.

One of the best, if not the best, LP by the Who. I’m lucky to have been alive during the best era of rock’n roll.

Still searching for the perfect Palm case.
I was excited to go from the Leather Zipper Case to the Sport Binder where I would have more room (see my review of the Leather Zipper Case). But I soon found that the binder was just a larger version with the same problems. The slim binder doesn’t allow you to put hardly anything within the rings and the palm is turned on as you try to zip the binder. I did like the mounting for the palm and stylus loop for easier access. But, I’m still looking for the perfect Palm case.
