Willy Wonka and Chocolate Fatory DVD
Order came earlier than described, great shape, packaging was great, no problem. Will use this seller again. 5 star service.

    Candy and dreams
This movie is intensely uneven; 85% is the most fantastic cinematic experience ever bar none. 15% is painfully sappy musical. What is even more amazing than the unevenness is that the Depp remake is half much more literal and faithful to the book, and half completely invented new plot, with one cheap gag worthy of the Zucker brothers (the “flags of all nations” exhibit). What is it about this fantastic work that means that people get most of the way there and then go insane? Could it be that the themes touch too deeply inside us?

Although Depp’s performance is also magnificent, Gene Wilder really IS Wonka in a deep (not Depp) way. And he delivers the key lines that get across the film’s main lessons…perfectly. He even pulls off a song (”Land of pure imagination”) in a way that is touching, dramatically balanced, and empirically justified. And the main lesson comes across: Candy is to children as dreams are to adults. And candy is all about purity–the children are weeded out because they bring greed and selfishness to the realm of candy making. The movie has more of a concession to our wishy-washy morality than Dahl’s book (he was never one to shy away from the gruesome death and mutilation of those who deserved it), in that everyone is supposed to turn out all right, but the comeuppance is still a severe one: thou shalt not lie, at least within the candy factory.

For a long time I was troubled by the fact that the film makers introduced this gratuitous scene in which Charlie and his grandpa broke the rules themselves. The whole point of the original was that there were two kinds of kids, bad and good. Charlie was good, so he gets the factory. End of story. If he is also bad, what’s the point?

Although I still think it led to cinematic weakness, on a moral level, I think that this concession to reality was important. It reminds us that even the heroes, even those who really do care about the miracle of candy, can make mistakes, they can break the rules. Unless you’re going to live your life like some nerdy Oompah-Loompah, you’ve got to make some tough decisions. In a world in which some guy wielding crazy knives can threaten you, maybe you should at least hedge your bets and tell Slugworth you might have something for him. At least, if he promises to get the knife sharpener off your back. [16]

We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of the dreams…
The HD version of this movie is great! The colors are amazing and vibrant. You can even see the sparkles in Willy Wonka’s vest… I never knew they were there in the past. The extra content is not HD but that is ok.

The movie is one of my 3 year old daughters favorites. She loves the songs and the Oompa Lompas.

Worst Blu ray I have seen.
There isn’t much I can say about this disk except it is the worst looking blu ray disc I have seen. This is really grainy looking. Full Metal Jacket which is 20 years older than this looks better.

    extremely grainy blu-ray picture
I won’t bore you with my views on Tomb Raider the film. Chances are if you are here researching this to buy, you’ve already fully formed your own opinion on this. Why people feel the need to post lenghty movie reviews here I’ll never understnd. But here is something that you might find useful to know: the blu-ray edition is a real mess. This happened to be the first film that I put into my new blue-ray player to view on my new 1080p tv and I was shocked. The film is shockingly grainy. I could see all kinds of grain and noise and garbage in the picture through much of the movie. It looked like a really poorly made standard def movie. I started playing with my player and tv thinking surely I must have not set the right options on it or something. Either that or my equipment must be horribly defective in some way. It wasn’t until I tried a couple other blu-ray disks that I realized what a poor transfer this disk is.

If you are a big Tomb Raider fan, you still might enjoy watching this (after all, we’ve all gotten used to standard-def equipment over the years). But if you are looking for a film to showcase your fancy blu-ray player and tv and get that “theater-like” experience, then definitely avoid getting this disk.

    Oh Gag Me
Although you have Angelina Jolie as gorgeously hot as she is, travelling around the world as a kickass adventurer, Lara Croft - Tomb Raider ignored the great elements that made the Tomb Raider video games what they are today. For example, the movie in no way follows the way the video game works. Plus, Angelina Jolie (as hot as she is) COMPLETELY butchers the character of Lara Croft. How, you might ask? The character was held back. While in this movie, she’s kind of nice, in the video game, she is MERCILESS, and much more tactical than in the movie. She was way too nice to be Lara Croft - Tomb Raider.

Stay away from this movie if you LOVE the video games!! It’s a real downer.

    Let’s Get Medieval
This is the movie that ushered me into college in the summer of 1994. It’s also the first movie that I can recall attending six times over the course of that summer. Never before had I ever returned to the theater for a return engagement to a movie. It was like nothing I had ever seen before and I couldn’t get enough of it.

A year later, I would watch the film in my Medieval Lit class and get some more perspective on the film. There is such a rich tapestry of detail present in this film. Jules and Vincent, the two ultra hip knights doing the bidding of their king, Marcellius Wallace. Mia as Guinevere, on display for the troops, the ultimate test of loyalty. we have two betrayals of the loyalty, one by Butch and one by Vincent. Butch saves Marcellius’s life, thus earning him his own life, but he pays for his disloyalty with banishment from the kingdom. “You lost all your LA privileges,” Marcellius tells him. Vincent betrays Marcellius mentally and pays the price, dying at the hands of Butch. He also ignores the sign from God that Jules sees, returning to his crooked life, thus ensuring his eventual death. And the briefcase? Perhaps it is the Holy Grail, the two hit men knights errant sent to retrieve it by their king. Or it all just might be a really cool gangster flick with great dialog and a kicking soundtrack. You make the call.

    PULP FICTION
The movie, of course is good, but the DVD that I purchased skipped chapters and froze on other chapters thus having to start the movie again, or stop and start at a different place in the movie. Very disappointed in the quality of the DVD.

5 Stars to the Movie, 1 Star to the Digital Mastered (1 Disc Original DVD release)
I am not usually one to care at all when certain movies are released in Fullscreen Mode (and not avaiable in Widescreen) or if they are released in Dolby Mono sound. In fact its great to have some of the classic films of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s all avaiable on DVD. I do own a widescreen TV, so if I can get the format in Widescreen, I do so. Yet there is no excuse when I blockbuster hit such as Pulp Fiction is released on DVD with no 5.1 Dolby Surround, and the movie is letterboxed and not enhanced for 16×9 TV’s (which means the movie is in a 4:3 aspect ratio, but its letterboxed, and it really looks no better then a letterboxed or Widescreen copy version that would be avaiable on VHS)I figure that I would send out this warning to those that are wanting to choose between the two copies avaiable here on Amazon. The first is the copy I own, which is the original 1 Disc DVD version. The other is a two disc version which is the special edition. It has DTS and 5.1 Surround added, but I have no idea if this version has enhanced the widescreen viewing for 16×9 aspect ratios. If you had you pick, I would stay away from the single disc version, and get the special edition 2 disc DVD, even if the picture isnt changed (which once again, I am un-sure) at least you get “true 5.1 or DTS sound) There are those that might love the fact that the movie is letterboxed and not in fullscreen, as I know people that bought all their movies during VHS and Laserdisc days in letterbox or Widescreen modes if avaiable. I happen to be the opposite, I rather see fullscreen, then have the thing letterboxed with no 16×9 enhancement, because I see a huge dip in picture quality, even when letterboxed, with no 16×9 enhancement. Hope this helps some of you out when choosing which version to get (and for those looking for fullscreen, Amazon has copies on VHS for one cent. ENJOY…

    Out to Sea
Seagal’s immitation of Bruce Willis Die Hard pales in comparison. I’ve often wondered how Steven Seagal got a break in the movies. He seems possessed with the acting talents of a lawn gnome and his martial arts skills seem to consist of nothing more than a series of stunt men performing flips, slips and prat falls all around him everytime he blinks an eye. I would love to seem him in an actual M.A. competition, I don’t believe he would get very far. He just seems too phoney to take seriously and as such, his movies suffer.

    Great Film
This is a great film where Steven Seagal takes on a band of bad guys, which includes the Battleship USS Missouri’s Executive Officer and his former commanding officer when he was in the US Navy’s SEALS, to take back control of the ship before the bad guys can launch the ship’s nuclear cruise missiles against Hawaii. This movie takes place behind backdrop of the Battleship USS Missouri (BB-63)’s final voyage before it was decommissioned for the second and final time after the 50th anniversary of the attack on the US Naval base at Pearl Harbor.

    blu ray
under siege has never looked better the clarity is amazing much better than the dvd version as you would expect warner bros has done a great job

    A Must Own HD DVD!!!!
This Special Edition of The Road Warrior is Awesome!

The Hi-Def Transfer is outstanding, After watching it I can’t believe Warner Brothers ever sold the Original Standard Dvd Cut.

This print is Crisp, Clear close to Flawless! The Dolby Digital Plus rates AAA+++

This is one of those HD Films that should be used as the Demo to help push HD DVD Players.

The Extras include: Audio Commentary (Exclusive to HD)

Introduction by Film Critic Leonard Maltin, & Theatrical Trailer

Hopefully WB has the sense 2 Re-Master give the HD Treatment to Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

If you have a HD Player You have got to pick up this Great Cut 10/10

    Top Australian movie!
This movie is THE reason I went HD. It is perfect for demonstrating what HD DVD is capable of doing. For a movie that was produced in 1981 the picture and sound are both stunning. Highly recommended.

Finally, a worthy presentation of the classic film
By far the best presentation of Road Warrior yet. The panoramic shots of the Australian outback never looked so good. The cinematography really takes advantage of widescreen, even in the action shots, so it is perfect for HD. And it is an excellent HD transfer as well. The digital surround sound is also great on my stereo system, despite what some of the other reviews said.

I probably would have rated it 4.5 stars since there are so few extras, but I did not want to give people the impression that the movie, transfer, or presentation in HD format is not excellent by rating it just 4 stars. Without doubt this is a great HD-DVD, I would just like more on the disk.

    I agree: fantastic collection
So we can see how can be great the old films in blu-ray: fantastic! Yes, some have a little grain, but for the most part the quality is stunning. We WANT more, more old films in blu ray!

    that’s enterainment 1, 2, 3
For Blu-ray owners this set is a “must” . It shows how films of that ere really looked- the fabric and texture is all there! lets have more older films on Blu-ray, and soon!

Video Quality much less than expected
Most of the earlier video especially the black and white ones look very grainy. The regular DVDs appear to look more natural than this. This needs several rounds of refactoring before it is ready for prime-time. Hold off for now.
