Customer Reviews:
The closest experience to being there live
This is a masterfully produced disc. When you put this in your player and the theme music starts, you know you are in for a great night of jazz.

What truly makes this collection compelling is the well-balanced list of performances. There are artists new and old, well-known and not so well-known, from a surprisingly varied pool of jazz sub-genres: fusion, bebop, swing, latin, and bossa. There is even a blues performance thrown in. The performances themselves are mostly very good, with the occasional eye-opening one mixed in such as Marcus Miller’s Panther.

The production value of the disc is fantastic too. I would’ve loved this even on VHS because it is ultimately about the music; but there is something to be said about the excellent high definition video and sound. This is truly as close as one can get to being there live. The disc is also very well organized. It is easy to switch between sound formats and you can access the performances individually from the main menu too. Even the artist bios are well done. In fact, I found this Blu-ray disc so great that I’m now torn between buying the Legends of Jazz DVD collection or waiting for a Blu-ray release. I will probably buy the DVD set now since the music and the performances are what’s important I think.

As far as shortcomings, the only one I found is that the length is on the short side at 55 minutes. Everything else was perfect. If you like jazz, you’ll love this disc.

Extra-ordinary Performances
From the opening duet with Al Jarreau & Kurt Elling doing a scat rendition of Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five”, to Ramsey Lewis’ tranquil piano on “dear Lord”, this disc had me hooked. There is some amazing performances on here, but I was especially partial to Clark Terry’s “Mumbles”. The man had me mesmerized, smiling and laughing…not something you find yourself doing on a disc such as this.

The only reason I didn’t give it 5-Star rating is due to it’s length! I longed for more and I was disappointed when it was over. I sure do hope that they release another Legends of Jazz Blu-ray…I certainly will be one of the first to pick it up.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED…even if you’re only a marginal jazz fan (like me I suppose).

The best image I’ve seen on BD
If you want to impress your friends with the best possible quality image, just show them this BD. And it’s only 1080i!!!. You can see the minor details of the hair, faces, instruments of the artists, the texture of the clothes, all.

But the image is so amazing that you can forget that the musical pieces in this blu ray are also fantastic.

The only pity is why they don’t commercialize all the complete shows one by one in high definition. I’d buy all of them.

Perfect test disc
Perfect disc for Demo , one of my favorite blueray beside Pat matheny the way up disc

Nice Collection
This is a nice set for Jazz Buffs; the DVD isn’t as important but adds a nice touch if giving as a gift.

Customer Reviews:
Ancient Rome Is Populated with British Actors?
With its fascinating cultural history and scenery-chewing acting, Rome is a real kick in the tunic. In fact, my only complaint about it is this: Why populate the cast with so many Brits? Their accents are hardly helpful, and even the slang they use (”bugger?”) is very UK and not very Pax Romana. (Try getting some actual Italians next time, casting directors.)

Along these lines, some real dialogue doozies sneak through; I winced when a character spoke of “losing face,” a concept and expression that would fit nicely in a film on medieval Japan, but Italy 2,000 years ago? Not so much.

But don’t get me wrong, I really like this series. Be sure to turn on the special feature that inserts background captions into the scenes as you go for historical enlightenment.

Another great HBO series
Kudos to HBO for taking a chance on a series with huge production costs. The acting and characterizations are excellent, particularly Polly Walker. I’ve only watched the first five episodes (downloading from iTunes) but I like the portrayal of the future monarch Octavian who is smart and incredibly ruthless which is probably appropriate for somebody that would rule an empire such as rome.

Fantastic!
I am absolutely hooked on this HBO series. As good as the Sopranos - - or any other contemporary-set series. The characters are engaging, realistic, and interesting. You see life from all classes in Rome. The sets and costumes are amazing - - how much money have they spent on this? ROME lacks nothing - - violence, sex, money, pride, history, affection, patriotism, jealousy, honor, devotion - everything is in there! The social comentary reflects as much the lives of ancient Romans, as today’s Western world.

From the dvd “extras” it seems as though the history is fairly acurate and the writers & producers went above and beyond expectations to be realistic.

Highly reccommend this to one and all.

Most accurate historical series
Start with the game, Rome, then go to Wikipedia to answer your many questions. When you have put it all in context, get the HBO video series, Rome, and see it all illustrated. Highly accurate and well researched, it will show you the way it was, the way it went wrong, and why the Roman Empire was crying out for the sort of reform that the Christian movement brought it.

The gaffs are few. The writing is excellent. The history is accurate. The presentation of social anthropology through the lives of Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus, like Rosencrantz and Gildenstern, is highly entertaining.

Unique and Timeless
This series is unique and timeless in so many ways. The fact that it didn’t attract a following sufficient for another season is disappointing but not surprising; people seem to equate Rome with epics, and while I like movies like Gladiator, I’d much rather see a drama rooted in the social and historical realities of the period. This series may be the first and last of that breed. No, it is not a scrutinizing, one hundred percent accurate portrait; you could not tell a story about ancient Rome relevant to the general viewer without making it just that, a story. But historical epics like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven give us rather dry characters who seem to be humanists dropped into a historical period. This is the story of characters driven by the realities of their time, who very much belong to the period. Add to this a brilliant cast and high production values, and this series will surely live forever.

P.S. I love you
This has to be the best movie I have seen in a long time! Not only is the acting supurb, but the story itself is wonderful. I don’t think there was a moment during the film where I wasn’t crying. I highly recommend this movie to everyone!

A chick flick a guy would like too
A good movie for couples to watch, or even a good sit down with mom

P.S. I love you
I have not recieved the movie I order, so I can’t review it. Please check to when it will be shipped.

Chick Flick With Depth
This film takes the boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back and lives happily ever after and sets it all on its ear. The formula here is girl lives happily with boy until he’s taken from her by brain cancer, whereupon she loses herself. The satisfying ending comes only when his letters, written before his death to guide her recovery, help her wade her way through their past to find her future. It’s clever, funny and fresh (if you can take the leap of faith and go with it), and the cast is excellent.

Unfortunately, the extras are lacking. The most interesting to me is the deleted scene at the travel agency, the only time we see the hero while he’s dying, but with his sense of humor still very much alive.

If you’re in the mood to laugh a lot through a few tears, this movie is perfect for you.

Watch it and then buy it!
This movie was excellent from start to finish. To be so in love with someone and want them to realize that life goes on after you are gone is amazingly unselfish. Hilary Swank gives a truly heartwarming performance as a woman who loses the love of her life. Definitely a movie that I will add to my collection!

Great Transfer
This was a excellent HD Transfer on the HD-DVD with plenty of features. Should be just as good (if not better) on Blu-Ray. The only downside is that the DTS track was in 6.1 ES, which isn’t supported by any HD-DVD players and very few Blu-Ray players support this track (this matters if you are using PCM sound through HDMI). Most Blu-Ray players make the jump from DTS Core Audio to HD High Resolution and HD Master Audio with nothing in between. Don’t be discouraged though, cause it still sounds great down-mixed to 5.1. Highly recommend switching from the DVD version to this HD version. The quality is great and a definite improvement over the DVD releases.

Forget politics — this is a great film to have!
While I don’t think this is a five star movie (probably a solid three or four) something has to be done to balance out the idiots who are posting lower ratings for this excellent film solely based on their dislike of Paramount (who has finally come over to blu like everyone else).

So — if you want this film, buy it on BD because it is available (it’s actually already in stores but Amazon has a weird idea not to make it available until June 3). It’s a very good film, terrific action, and the pic quality and sound should be excellent (read the reviews of it on regular DVD to get a better idea).

ITS ALLREADY ON BLU RAY
I dont know why these people are crying but the movie is out on BLU RAY now. Paramount has swithed to Blu Ray and will start releasing films on BLU RAY. I Allready own it and its great

Woo makes a great “Face Off”
I’ve not been too pleased with some of John Woo’s American films as compared to the HK movies he did formerly but this one is a rare exception. Free of studio tampering, “Face Off” is a tour de force for the director and the two lead actors, Travolta & Cage. I’ve seen this on Standard def than I rented the HD DVD version and what a difference!! If you want someone to notice the advantages of Hi-Def over standard, play them this disc! The visuals have a depth of field unequalled to none (maybe Batman Begins perhaps) and the sonics are out of this world to boot! I am definitely buying a copy of this in HD DVD before they’re gone. I recommend this to owners of HD DVD machines as well.

Great Picture + Great Movie
With a cast of John Travolta and Nicholas Cage, you won’t find a movie full of more action and suspense. This movie has a very unique story that will keep you coming back for more. The HD Picture is amazing. You can definitely tell they took the time to go back over to make the picture as clear as possible. A+ in my book, although I’m a big Travolta & Cage fan.

Deep masterpiece on crime fighting.
None of us knows what it’s really like to go undercover. We think we do but we don’t. Sure, we’ve watched the movies, read the books and all but what it’s doing to your soul, your family life, everything, that it destroys all you have and feel, that is what this movie is about.

When Lefty (Al Pacino as a low level mobster) takes in Donnie (Johnny Depp as an undercover FBI agent) he tells him “Wiseguys are always right. Even when they’re wrong they’re right,” he is wrong. Dead wrong. He just doesn’t know it yet.

Lefty treats Donnie as a son and Donnie gets emotionally involved. In his own way Lefty has a big heart, his hopes and dreams. But the dirt gets in the way and they don’t materialize.

Bit by bit both Lefty’s and Donnie’s lives derail. Donnie starts losing his wife and kids and Lefty his rank in the (crime)family.

Can they do anything to save what’s left? Do they want to and if so, what is more important, life as it was, friendship or the uncertain future? Does risking everything justify the costs?

Based on a true story this marvelous film shows the dirt as it is. Forget about the romance of other mobster movies and enter loyalty and misery. Both Al Pacino and Johnny Depp give larger than life performances. The supporting cast is terrific as is the directing. The 70s style indoor lighting helps turn it into a timeless masterpiece.

The Blu-ray disc is sharp as can be. This one should be in your collection.

wrong one
I did not realize there is such a difference in DVD’s. I ordered the worng one and had to send it back.

One of the Best on Blu-Ray
I remember catching Donnie Brasco in the theater and thinking it was stupendous back in 1997. The entire cast is as solid as Goodfellas … or any other movie for that matter. Initially I held off from buying the Blu-Ray because I wasn’t sure if the film stock of ‘97 would have all of the detail that high-def reveals, but this transfer is excellent. The few scenes that seem kind of soft are outweighed by the 99% of beautiful footage. I especially enjoyed the extra scenes added back into the film. I remember the theatrical release seemed to skim over Donnie’s home life because there was so much story to tell about him infiltrating the mob. Now I see they actually had tons of footage of his marriage with Anne Heche’s character. Normally extended versions have stuff that you think could have remained on the cutting room floor. In this case, every bit of it belonged back in the film. I regret that I didn’t get to see all of that footage on the big screen, but now a high def at home is like having the big screen at your house. Like every other reviewer has mentioned Depp, Pacino, Madsen, Bruno Kirby and Anne Heche make the best cast possible. It’s a must for any Blu-Ray library.

excellent
An excellent serie, accurate with ongoing events, moving and warmhearted, and with a sense of humor. The performence of the characters is highly profesional and natural.

JAG = best TV military series
I love JAG. It was nice to see the relationship between Harm (David Elliott) and Mac (Catherine Bell) grow. Also, the engagement of Bud (Patrick Labyorteaux) and Harriet (Karri Turner). There are a lot of action pack cases captures my attention. I recommend this to anyone who is like military dramas.

Semper fidelis
I liked the show from the first moment on. I like the cast, the storylines and the chemestry between the actors. It it very enjoyable.

JAG Collection
JAG (Judge Advocate General) - The Third Season

If you are a JAG fan, you will want to complete your collection with all the seasons. It is great having the dvd’s to watch at any time. The show is on the cable channels, but not always shown at a convenient time.

JAG… and nothing more
I now have all seasons (1-4) of JAG released so far. It hurts me to give this DVD set anything below 5 stars because I’m as big a JAG fan as JAG fans come… but having seen 200+ episodes on TV before the DVD sets were released at all, I wanted to see more than just the episodes. It’s great that I have the episodes but it would’ve been nice to get more. Not a single minute of special features on the discs (by the way, the sticker on the front said ‘with great special features!’)… Even some episode commentary would have been nice. That’s really disappointing. Seasons 1 and 2 had a few good features. Season 4 has 4 minutes worth… I hope future released seasons offer more.

Great Season but completely lacks mention of Sanaa Lathan!
Season 4 was a great comeback to S3 leaving off the whole Carver story but

still lingers the convict Escogobar. Christrian finally falls in love this time with the much under-rated Sanaa Lathan as Michelle and much turmoil succeeds because of it. Matt finally grows up but still fails at his worst with women. Sean and Julia can’t seem to make things work no matter what and you so want them to due to the birth of Connor. Corruptness, many things that are illegal and much inner speculating of the 2 Dr’s biggest things on everybodys mind “are they gay”. This season also spouts the popular Mario Lopez shower scene and that chic from MTV Idalis surprises everyone w/her acting ability. Season 4 probably has the BEST guest stars, such as Larry Hagman, Alanis Morriset, Kathleen Turner, Melissa Gilbert, Mario Lopez, Monique, and former supermodels Jacqueline Bessit and Brooke Shields. Sex, drugs, lipo, homo-erotica, and murder mayhem all fit perfectly into Season 4.

Nip :)
Got this for a NIPTUCK fan as a xmas gift and they were very happy.

Yet another exciting drama!!
Like all the other seasons, Nip/Tuck season 4 has the same thrilling drama, comedy and spine-tingling operations. The storyline is great and keeps you watching episode after episode to see what happens next!

Wonderful
Another great season for Nip/Tuck. Makes me eager for the next season to be released on DVD!

Nip/Tuck Season 4 DVD
Nip/Tuck lives up to its reputation with gory surgery details but fascinating turn of events in almost every episode. Enjoyed watching it thoroughly. Can’t wait to get Season 5 on DVD.

Disappointing Finale (Spoilers)
Like others, I thought the cinematograhpy was exceptional, the character development was commendable and the setting alluring. However, the second season left me quite disappointed. Not only did it become increasingly, gratuitiously gory, but the plot thinned considerably. And the final episode? How was Ben suddenly able to choose who he wanted to take life from? One of the biggest problems he faced throughout Season 1 and Season 2 was that he had trouble directing the siponing of energy to one specific person. Remember how he made Libby leave when he was taking energy from the vultures to save Jonsey? If he had the power to choose the vultures over Libby, then why did he make her leave?

Also, I felt like the writters decision to make Sofie evil at the end was a weak attempt at giving the final epoisode a clever twist. If she was at risk for becoming evil because her father was evil, then why wasn’t Ben faced with the same challenge since his father was the “usher”? I resent having spent so many hours watching a show that destroys the most well-developed and likable characters at the end in an disjointed battle between good and evil where evil essentially prevails.

Perhaps the most epic show ever.
Carnivale is perhaps the most rewarding show of all time. Such an expansive story unfolds in a much too brief two seasons. The show may seem slow at times but a keen viewer will always take the time to absorb and delve much further into the plot. If you don’t have time to relax, concentrate, and watch then don’t watch at all. Your much better off putting on a stupid game show or something. It’s truly up to you if you weather you will become a fan of Carnivale or not. With patience, integrity, and intelligence you will find you’ve stumbled across one of the most artistic and enthralling shows ever to grace your T.V. Unfortunately all this could be lost if you choose to watch and not truly see, listen but not fully hear, and especially approach Carnivale with almost any prejudices at all. Finally I shall say rent the first few episodes and if you hate them don’t continue. But if there is even the slightest chance that you think you could continue then watch all two seasons up until the very end. Odds are you will be clutched to the plot and quivering at the edge of your seats, as the story unfolds, worlds collide, and “good” gallantly versus “evil”.

carnivale
anyone who has seen hbo’s brilliant and far too short series “carnivale” knows what a star it is in anyone’s dvd collection. if you have not seen it be prepared for a rare experience. not always easy to watch, and not for children, but amazing, imaginative and visually beautiful.

Fantasic
I really can’t say much. Everything’s already been said. I just wanted to say that although there was quite a change in the series, it still turned out amazing. It’s just a shame it hasn’t gone for a 3rd or 4th or even up to a 6th season (like it was planned).

Why did you stop it???
What shall thou do to make you continue this incredible master piece???? The german fan club is waiting desperately……..!!!!!!!!!!
